ZHAO Jianqiu, born in 1955, is a native of Yiyang, Hunan Province of China. He graduated from the Fine Arts Academy of Hunan Normal University, and studied with some famous Chinese painters like ZENG Jingxiang, ZHONG Yiqin, DU Ziling and JIA Youfu, etc. ZHAO Jianqiu is currently a Professor at Zhejiang Normal University, Director of Dongting Art Academy, Vice-President of Hunan Chinese Painting Association, and a Member of China Artists Association.
In the past few decades, he has been devoting himself to the exploration and research of the landscape painting of Dongting Lake. In his works, we can see the vigorous and magnificent wildness of the Northwest plateau of China, and also the delicate and pastel landscape of Southern wetland of China. He integrates western and Chinese painting styles, combining the traditional with contemporary. His brush strokes are vigorous yet smooth, with a serene and fresh application of ink, which exude a magnificent and elegantly impressive manner. All these factors constitute his strong and unique personal painting style.
His paintings have been exhibited at the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th National Art Exhibition of China, and the 3rd and 4th National Sport Art Exhibition of China. His painting “Harmonious Wind” was awarded the Silver Prize at 2008 World Ink Wash Painting Exhibition in Japan; his “Ancestral Estates” gained the Excellence Award at 2006 National Art Exhibition; his “Wind of Dongting Lake” was granted the Excellence Award at the 5th Selected Works Exhibition for Members of China Artists Association; and his “Homes Floating on the Water” received the Gold Award at 2009 China Contemporary Landscape Painting Exhibition. He has given solo exhibitions at National Gallery of China in 2012, Tsinghua Unversity Fine Art Academy Gallery in 2013, and Carrousel Du Louvre in Paris, France in 2014. In 2015, his exhibition “Celebrating The Trans-Himalayan Bond” was held at Nepal Art Council Gallery (Kathmandu) and National Museum of China (Beijing).
